Blood can be used to control vampires, but there are other means to do so.

Nessa raised her fist to her lips and frowned. She silently counted her resources, knitted her eyebrows together furiously calculating odds, and scanned the other player's boards. "I... pass." She leaned back in her chair, chewing her lip.

Jinx picked up the dice and started fidgeting with them, clacking the old wooden dice in one hand. "I thiiiiink..." She started, and then suddenly dropped all the dice with a shout. "Ouch!"

A short vampire piece in response to "The monster doesn't know where it is. It knows this, because it also doesn't know where it isn't." Based off the board game Nyctophobia, which is truly excellent, with the right host...

Nessa, blindfolded, finds Gabby guiding her hand to her plastic piece. She feels around - empty space, forest, the empty hole where Jinx's piece should be...

"Um," she says. "I think I'm lost."

"What do you mean, lost? Weren't you right next to Jinx?"

"Not anymore. I guess I got moved?"

"Or she did."

Nessa moves her piece over one space, where Jinx was, and feels around herself again. The forest maze materializes in her memory, foggy moonlit pines in orderly grid rows... and the space she's in doesn't match any of them. "Shit. I think maybe the forest changed?"

"That's right, my dear Nessa," says Gabby right in Nessa's ear. She jumps, but not very far, as Gabby circles her arm around Nessa's neck. "The forest moves at my command. Does that truly surprise you?"

Nessa can just visualize Gabby, clad in gossamer black fabric, her dark skin blending in with the foreboding pines, her pointed hat shading her face save for a crooked, pointy smile. She shivers as Gabby runs a finger down her neck.

"Yes, I think you'll make a lovely little puppet. I can almost see your strings already..."

Nessa squeaks. "I hide and end my turn!"

Gabby whispers in her ear, her lips lingering by Nessa's neck. "Spoilsport..."

I wrote a short series of vampire fiction a while back, and given that it's spooky season it seemed prudent to bring it back - after all, I can't tell new stories without telling you the old ones

Nessa got out of the hired car and stood, apparently, at the address she'd been invited to. "Oh, you've got to come with us to board game night," Gabby had said. "There's this great board game cafe on broad street, I'll text you the address." She had failed to mention that it was some kind of gothic castle.

Impressions of Detail: The dark around you rustles, crackles, splits under your exploratory hands — the inside of a cocoon?

My head felt fuzzy, like I'd just barely woken up and could drift back off to sleep at any moment. I tried to turn over, pull the blankets up around me and burrow back into bed, but something stopped me. It was like I was lying on top of the blanket I was trying to move, or trying to turn while lying on my own hair. No matter how much I tugged at it, it wouldn't come free. My arms felt weak, entrapped, like I was still dreaming and half sleep paralyzed.

I tried opening my eyes - usually that dispelled any leftover dreams I was having - but found that it was still pitch-black. My first thought was It's too early for this. My second thought was Wait, where's the power strip light?

A, who's kinda glad she's always had her childhood friend B to rely on and help her through the tough times, and who would do anything for her

B, who's known A for less than a week but had to do something to blend in and hide from the law, and now feels really bad about it

Jen sat on the cliff overlooking the town with her childhood friend, Scarlet, just like they had done every weekend of every summer throughout their lives. It definitely got better when they were old enough to buy their own ice pops, and even better when Scarlet got a fake ID and could buy beer earlier this summer. Jen couldn't enjoy them in quite the same way, lacking a digestive system, but she liked pressing the cold cans to her heat sinks and feeling the condensation drip down her artificial skin.

Jen snuck a look at Scarlet as she tipped back a can to catch the last dregs. Her dirty-blonde hair had been cut short just a few days ago, and it looked good. Better than just good. Scarlet put down the can, and Jen hurriedly looked away, her cooling vanes spreading out behind her in the setting sun. Why now? They'd known each other for more than a decade, they'd grown up together, she'd been there when Jen had figured out she liked girls, so why-

Why was it only now, less than a day before she was supposed to leave, that she'd caught feelings for her best friend?
